In the summer of 2021, I sailed the Great Lakes in the company of Capt. Bryan Kapteyn, owner of the sailing vessel Torenvalk, Bryan’s son Nick, who was with us some of the time, and Cyndy Keesler. Every few days, I posted a blog through my listserve Constant Contact and then uploaded them here. You can track our route and progress online at share.garmin.com/Z2MWP
2021-06-07 Great Lakes sailing with Bryan Kapteyn
The crew of four: Capt. Bryan, Nick Kapteyn, Cyndy Keesler, and I embarked from Holland, Michigan, on this Sunday evening. Destination: Port Washington, Wisconsin, where we arrived safely at noon on Monday.
2021-06-11 Wisconsin shore
With little wind, we’ve been motoring north on the west side of Lake Michigan, along the part of the Wisconsin shore known as Dorr County. We’ve stayed in nice marinas and enjoyed some time ashore, exercising and absorbing local culture.
In this blog, meet the crew of Torenvalk and learn about three ports we visited on Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula. This finger of land and its extension of archipelago islands form the distinction between Lake Michigan and Green Bay.
2021-06-19 Washington Island to Beaver Island … and beyond
Our voyage back across Lake Michigan from the Door Peninsula to Beaver Island was long, eventful, enjoyable, smooth, and rough. Sadly, Cyndy and I have excused ourselves from the rest of the voyage. This blog concludes with our return, by land, to Holland, Michigan.
