Indian boarding schools: Inhumanity, Injustice, and Cultural Genocide in the name of God and ‘Civilization’
From the early 1800s to the late 1900s, the US government, in conjunction with churches, operated 408 Indian boarding schools in 37 states; five in Michigan. The curriculum was child labor; physical, emotional, and sexual abuse; cultural genocide; and forced assimilation into the White ways to solve the “Indian problem.” In this presentation, I will relate stories I’ve learned from talking with adult “survivors” of those schools.
